public hunting areas set apart for the huntsmen. The world famous Warner Mountain Range is
here, too. The high desert climate (altitudes varing from 4,000 ft. at valley floor to 10,000 ft.
at the peak of the Warner Mountain Range) makes for warm dry summers and a perfect retreat
for that getaway vacation spot. Open all year, Modoc County is a huge playground that
encourages camping, fishing, cross-country skiing, down-hill skiing, snow boarding, horses,
day-hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, canoeing and dozens of other outdoor activities.
The Modoc National Wildlife Refuge protects many animals. Please call the Chamber for
special maps and seasonal calendars for educational programs on hunting, fishing, etc. Plus,
the ModocVolcanic Scenic Byway traverses an area which includes Tule Lake National
Monument and portions of the Klamath, Shasta-Trinity, and Modoc National Forests. It covers
over 120 miles and at the summit of the volcano lies Medicine Lake which is a beautiful place
to picnic, camp, fish and explore! (see map above)
Special events take place every season, like professional rodeos, numerous horse and
livestock shows, a ski fest competition, cycling opportunities, rifle ranges, auto races, endurance
horseback rides and hot air balloon races in September! Alturas is a friendly town which hosts
endless choices for family fun and recreation. Back roads and hillside trails are surrounded by
the National Forests so hikers and backpackers can explore countless areas that include gorgeous
views of glacial lakes and grassy meadows. Off-road vehicles are especially popular on some
of the back-country trails as well as horseback riding.
Fishing in Modoc County is one of it’s greatest attractions … Ice fishing in the wintertime, or
fly- fishing in the Pit River, or fishing in one of a dozen different lakes in Modoc County … it’s
all good ~ see the map above for all the lakes nearby ~ Eagle Lake is a local favorite, as is Blue
Lake!(see picture #10) Even Mt.Shasta and Shasta Lake is only a two hour drive away, along
with Mount Lassen.
